The Postman’s Knock

This made me laugh this morning. I think I need to watch this movie!

Also, a question: does anyone know the origins of the “Postman’s Knock” game? I know it started in England at least 100 years ago, but I’m trying to find a rough date and not having any luck…

UPDATE: Apparently the trailer above can’t be seen on some browsers. Sorry! If you’re having trouble, here is a direct link to watch it (it’s Spike Milligan in The Postman’s Knock, 1962).

I couldn’t get the video to play on the TCm site either! I’d never heard of that game before, so had to google it – I thought maybe it was something like what we called “knicker-knocking” growing up (you knock on someone’s door and then run away). Sounds like an equally ambiguously appropriate game for kids. :)

Hmm sorry, seems that link was a bit of a dud! If you can ever get to see the trailer for “The Postman’s Knock” (1962), it looks quite cute (very bumbling Spike Milligan style).

I couldn’t open the link on my iPad. ☹️

I googled ‘origin of the postman’s knock’ game and ended up with probably all you saw also. THe kissing game Post Office answers cam up – not what we wanted.
My suggestion is to ask a librarian when research is at a dead end. Good luck. I hope you let us know how you get on with it.
